BigCommerce Theme Design and Catalog Update
Improving the checkout process for an office supplies product wholesaler

About the client
Our client delivers superior customer service and back-office solutions tailored to the specific needs of their BPO customers.
We updated the data using AI and customized the checkout for the best ordering experience for their customers. To keep their service level consistently high, we also designed a BigCommerce theme, provided product categorization, and implemented request-to-quote functionality. Taken together, these measures led to a clear website structure and made the customer journey easier than before.

About the project
A full-service business process outsourcing (BPO) company that has been operating for more than 20 years wanted to update their BigCommerce website. The company’s wide geographical presence — from the USA to Côte d’Ivoire and the Philippines —as well as its long business history and active development, resulted in the collection of extensive data that needed to be updated. More precisely, we reviewed, updated, or downloaded data on over 137,000 products.
As our client operates in the B2G sector, it was also crucial for them to categorize their products so that wholesale purchases according to state standards could go smoothly.
This meant that our total scope of work included providing a new design for a BigCommerce theme, actualizing the catalog and categorizing items, and implementing custom check-out and request-to-quote functionality so that clients could easily find products.

Project scope and key challenges

Design a
new theme
Since the client’s site had been operating for quite some time, they wanted to visually refresh it to differentiate it from competitors.

Update categories
with AI assistance
To make it easier to search for products, we updated product names, SKUs, and images and developed precise categorization with the help of AI.

Implement
custom options
According to the rules of the field that the client operates in, we customized request to quote and product fields so that clients don’t have to enter personal information to place an order — they can now request a quote in one click.

Add product and
meta descriptions
We created some CMS pages about product categories so that the client could fill them with product descriptions, and we added a meta description for SEO to all products.

Managing 137,000 items and
platform restrictions
We needed to upload an impressive amount of data (media files, products, categories) to BigCommerce. However, BigCommerce does not allow developers to upload data in such volumes, which required us to find a workaround with an external module. Another issue we encountered was that fields in the source data were not consistent (names, SKUs, data types, etc.), so we had to run some scripts and workarounds to make the data consistent for use in BigCommerce. We had the same issue when updating categories in catalogs and required workarounds to make the categories consistent. Finally, the out-of-the-box BigCommerce theme couldn’t show all categories in a user-friendly way, so we had to customize the menu.
